The PTSD Foundation of America exists to bring hope and healing to Veterans and their families suffering from the effects of combat-related post-traumatic stress. Founded in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Foundation began as a grassroots effort led by a small group of concerned volunteers who searched the streets of Houston for homeless Veterans. From its inception, the organization has been driven by a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to drastically reduce the Veteran suicide rate through comprehensive programming and outreach services.
The urgency of this mission is undeniable. Over the past decade, more than 80,000 Veterans have been lost to suicide, 20,000 more than the number of American service members killed in action during the Vietnam War. The Veterans Health Administration estimates that 44 Veterans die by suicide each day. In response to this crisis, the PTSD Foundation of America has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit organization known for addressing the complex challenges of post-traumatic stress and transforming the lives of those who have served.
In 2012, the Foundation established Camp Hope, an interim housing and healing facility located in Houston, Texas. What began as an eight-bedroom home providing transitional housing for Veterans working to overcome invisible wounds has expanded into a five-acre campus featuring five residential facilities with 120 beds. The campus also includes dedicated buildings for classes, worship services, Warrior Group meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and family integration programming. Since its inception, Camp Hope has maintained a 24-hour crisis line answered by a trained combat Veteran, ensuring immediate peer-to-peer support for those in need. Today, the organization employs approximately 100 individuals nationwide and offers a wide range of services designed to prevent and reduce Veteran suicide.
Over the past twelve years, more than 16,000 combat Veterans from all branches of the U.S. military, along with their families, have found help, healing, and hope through the Foundation’s Outreach programs and Camp Hope. Outreach offices are strategically located in regions with some of the highest Veteran suicide rates. The Foundation currently operates chapters in five states and six major metropolitan areas, including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta, and Tampa. Outreach efforts focus on connecting Veterans with PTSD to the Camp Hope program when eligible, providing peer-to-peer support, Warrior support groups, crisis intervention, and community-based education through PTSD and suicide awareness presentations.
