The Virtual Dementia Tour® is a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of sensory tools and instruction. During a Virtual Dementia Tour? experience, participants are outfitted with patented eyewear that distorts their vision, audio equipment that alters their hearing and devices that alter the sense of touch in the hands and foot. Tasks and exercises that are part of the Tour enable caregivers and professionals to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges facing those with dementia. Created by P.K. Beville, M.S., an award-winning geriatric specialist and founder of Second Wind Dreams®, an international, nonprofit organization recognized as the first in the nation committed to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams for elders. For more information about Second Wind Dreams® and The Virtual Dementia Tour® visit www.secondwind.org. ?We are excited to be able to offer this unique resource to our community and caregivers,? said Mary King, Executive Director of Metroport Meals On Wheels. ?The Virtual Dementia Tour? is a powerful and enlightening experience to help families and professionals truly experience what it is like to walk in the shoes of an older adult who is struggling with dementia?, she added. Nationwide, over 50 million people are caring for their loved ones themselves, versus placing them in a nursing or care facility which is very expensive.
